Clinical, Counseling and Consulting Services

Coping with physical, emotional and relationship stress, adjusting to unwelcome, unexpected or dramatic changes or managing chronic illness can be made much easier by gradually discarding habitual patterns of negative thinking and behavior and replacing them with satisfying, healthy and mindful ways of living. The key to doing this is in understanding yourself and others. How and why are you suffering and what do you need to be happy? How can you better understand others and relate to them effectively?

The Heart of Understanding yourself begins with finding a way to access your inner resources. Developing a daily devotional practice based upon your own faith, philosophy and values and committing to practicing this method acts as a grounding agent for your life.  The Heart of Understanding others is to learn ways to communicate compassionately and with the wisdom that others want to be free of suffering and to find happiness as well.  Individual work with a psychologist who integrates these processes often allows you to quickly learn ways to become your own therapist.

Our time together will include designing ways for you to be your most effective self. Research has shown that active meditation, relaxation or hypnosis produces well being, reduces pain and increases energy.  There is also a great deal of evidence that therapy produces results equal to those produced by medication for mood disorders and diseases of stress and adjustment. Because you know yourself better than anyone else possibly can, I work in concert with you on goals you select to improve areas you think need to be improved. My approach is warm, active, direct, and includes methods from traditional, evidence based psychological theories as well as Buddhist principles that are tailored to your own faith practices. I am a professor of psychiatry mentoring students at the UCSD College of Medicine and a staff psychologist serving veterans in the Spinal Cord Unit at the Veteran’s Hospital in La Jolla. I have been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist for 17 years under the guidance of authentic teachers.
